3D Design & 3D Printing

3D Modeling, or creating a virtual, three-dimensional model of a physical object using specialized software, has become a vital part of the fields of engineering, architecture, animation, and virtual reality. With this program, kids will get an introduction to the world of 3D Design through both the modeling and printing platforms, utilizing intuitive, drag-and-drop programs like Tinkercad and Sculptris.  Introduction to the world of 3D modeling and printing using a simple web-based tool: Tinkercad. Objects can be created by combining simple 3-dimensional geometric shapes with a simple drag-and-drop interface. Shapes can be printed or incorporated into other digital creations. If you can imagine it, you can model it.This program does not require any additional equipment.

Recommended Ages: 7 and up

Digital Animation

Digital Animation is the art and craft of creating moving images with a computer, and with this curriculum in Talent Box, you’ll learn the basic tools and techniques of animating two-dimensional scenes starting with the program Stykz, exploring time-tested principles of animation along the way.  Then, you’ll graduate to more advanced animation and filmmaking techniques such as storyboarding, camera movement, tweening, timing, exaggeration, perspective, and lighting. This Track requires that paper and pencils be available for writing and storyboarding.

Recommended Ages: 7 and up

Digital Audio Production

The way we hear media is just as vital as the way we see it.  Digital Audio, sound that has been recorded as or converted into a digital form, where the sound wave of the audio signal is encoded as numerical samples in continuous sequence.Digital audio technology includes sound recording and reproduction using audio signals that have been encoded in digital form. With Digital Audio Production program, kids will learn how to work with tools like Mixcraft and Reaper to create a variety of recordings and sound mixes.Students will examine the fundamentals of music (rhythm, key, tempo, harmony, melody) and how to construct a

well-balanced song.

Recommended Ages: 7 and up

Stop Motion Animation

Stop motion is the art of ordering still image sequences to create detailed movement, which can be done with simple, inexpensive equipment and a variety of computer platforms. With Stop Motion Animation program, kids will start with the fundamentals (simple scenes, basic story writing, character manipulation, staging, and walk cycles) and then transition to more advanced concepts (green screen, gesture drawing, timing, overlapping action, sound design, detailed emotion, lighting, and color theory). Students will explore and identify the principles of basic stop motion animation production (as well as pre- and post-production elements), applying knowledge to the creation of their own scenes and sequences. This program requires devices with easily moveable cameras, such as tablets, or webcams if using desktop or laptop computers. Animation supplies may include modeling clay, paper, markers, and LEGO.

Recommended Ages: 6 and up

Coding with Scratch

The future of technology begins with computer coding, but where’s a good place to start if you have the passion, just not the knowledge? Computer programming is the art of writing in a language that both humans and computers can understand.Scratch is a beginner-friendly, block-based language program that you can use to make fun games and short, animated scenes; in the process, kids will learn the basic techniques and common habits of computer programmers around the world. Students will recognize and describe how simple motion, loops, conditional statements, and events work in coding.  Students will also develop and reproduce sounds, looks, buttons, and functions.

Recommended Ages: 6 and up

Coding with Java

Programming is the process of encoding an algorithm into a language that can be executed by a computer in order to solve a problem. In this Track, you will learn how to use Java, one of the most widely used programming languages. Be prepared to challenge yourself to think like a computer as you complete games, apps, and mathematical simulations. This track does not require any additional equipment.Students will gain knowledge and practice the application of skills and concepts in standard programming syntax, variables, and methods, as well as explore programming strategy, efficient algorithm design, and loops.

Recommended prerequisite: Coding with Scratch

Recommended Ages: 9 and up

Minecraft

Minecraft offers a cornucopia of learning opportunities in architecture, animation, and circuitry.  With Minecraft curriculum in Talent Box, you’ll learn the game’s fundamentals, moving through a series of creative challenges while building your own world: make functional roller coasters, live animations, pixel art, architectural designs, and virtual mechanisms (using Minecraft’s patented electric current, Redstone).  You’ll also learn concepts such as “slash commands,” modding (using MCreator), and basic coding fundamentals.  Consider your imagination captured.

Minecraft Moding:

Modding is the practice of modifying a game by programming and designing custom functionality. In this program, students will learn to use MCreator,a specialized Minecraft tool, to make custom blocks, recipes, mobs, biomes, and more!

Minecraft Command Blocks:

Commands (often called “slash commands”) are a great way to adjust settings in your Minecraft world. While many options are also available through various menus (including the Classroom Mode interface), there are certain settings only accessible through these commands. In this program, students will learn how commands are set up through common variables like targeting and coordinates, and we will even go through a few essential commands to get you started.

Minecraft Architecture:

Architecture is the art and practice of constructing buildings. In this Track, using Minecraft as a creative tool, students will learn how to engineer purposeful constructs, craft appealing living spaces, replicate modern & ancient architectural styles, and integrate redstone wiring into your buildings.

Minecraft Redstone:

In Minecraft, you can perform feats of electrical engineering by using an item called Redstone to create circuits, logic gates, and complex machines. In this program, students will learn which items can be used to create Redstone circuits, combine mechanisms together, and explore creative applications of your knowledge.

Recommended Ages: 6 and up

Architectural Design

Architecture is the art and practice of constructing buildings. In this program, students learn how to discover the goals of their project, create a 3-dimensional space, understand functional flow, plan electrical and plumbing utilities, and explore different architectural styles. This program requires that paper and pencils be available for planning.Students will draft/draw building plans, design/build functional rooms, experiment with real-life physics, and list/distinguish between various architectural and historical styles.

Recommended Ages: 9 and up

Video Game Design

2D Video Game Design, students will use Game Maker Studio, a video game engine with a drag-and-drop interface and scripting capabilities, to sculpt your own personalized platformer, maze, or space shooter, learning the fundamentals of coding along the way.  From there, students can jump to 3D Video Game Design, utilizing the more sophisticated Unity application software to render three-dimensional worlds and characters.Students will recognize and describe the relationships between objects, sprites, and rooms; reproduce events and actions to move a character; and achieve simple goals within game play. Students will also identify various basic types of artificial intelligence and code with text.
